Part I: How to Install

This CD-ROM is designed to be fully compatible with Mac, PC
and UNIX computer platforms. To install and operate this
CD-ROM please follow these simple instructions:

 1. First place the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
    Be sure the label is facing up.

 2. Open or start your Web browser.

 3. Load the page "homepage.htm" into your Web browser. On most
    browsers, you'll use the File, Open File or File, Open Local
    File menu selection to load a document from a local drive.
    The file "homepage.htm" is located in CD-ROM's main directory.

Once your browser loads "homepage.htm" you can read this
file, or you can enter the Encyclopedia.

Special Notice to Macintosh Users:

If you try to list the contents of the folder named "wwwe" on your
machine, you'll get an error message from the Finder that reads
"Too many files to display." This is not a problem; you don't need
to use the Finder to access files from the CD; use your Web browser
instead. Please ignore this message, and use the file named
"homepage.htm" in the CD's root directory to enter the
document collection through your Web browser. Enjoy!


Part II: How to Get the Most Out of This CD-ROM

This CD-ROM based book was designed with you, our gentle reader,
in mind. We endeavored to create a product that is both
educational and easy to use. Also, we constructed the HTML
documents that make up this Encyclopedia to be fully compatible
with every major computer platform (or at least, any platform
that supports a Web browser).

With this disc in your computer's CD-ROM drive and a Web browser,
you have access to all of the following elements:

     - Over 500 in-depth definitions
     - Cross-linked terms
     - References to useful print resources
     - Tutorials
     - Step by step walk-throughs of many Web-related activities

To get even more out of this CD-ROM, a PPP or SLIP Internet
connection will allow you to access online resources, including:

     - Tutorials
     - Standards documents
     - Useful hotlists and resource collections
     - Graphic Archives
     - Helper Applications
     - And much, much more.

Throughout this CD-ROM, you will find links to online resources
that can provide you with current information, and launch you into
the heart of the universe of the World Wide Web.


Your Browser at its Best

Throughout this work, you will find cross-links, indexes, internal
anchors and external URLs that allow you to jump from one resource
to another, located on this CD-ROM and out on the Internet. You
should find the hypertext in this work both enlightening and
informative, but you will need to understand our navigation
methods to use this CD-ROM effectively.


Page Controls

As listed on the Navigation Buttons page, each WWWE page has
navigation control buttons. These buttons are defined uniquely for
each page. The two buttons that you may find a bit confusing are
the (BACK) and (NEXT) buttons. These buttons are linked to their
respective previous or following pages within the current page
collection. For example, on a word definition page, the (BACK)
button is linked to the alphabetically prior term, but on a topic
page, the same button is linked to the Topic list or the previous
page of tutorial/topic documentation. Generally, these buttons
are not required to navigate the WWWE. We included them to permit
you to scan quickly through the word definitions and the longer
tutorial pages.

To return to a page you've already visited, use the BACK
command/button on your Web browser to return to the preceding page.


Stale or Bad URLs

Because the Internet is so dynamic, it's inevitable that some of
the URLs included here will become stale, obsolete, or
non-existent. When you try to follow a link that is no longer
functioning, or points to a resource different from the one you
expect, you can easily locate newer, more up-to-date information
by using a search engine. Here are a few suggestions to use when
trying to locate replacement URLs:

     - search on the topic, subject or term
     - use the name of the site
     - use a portion of the URL
     - check the WWWE's Website at http://www.lanw.com/w3e/
       for update information

If that doesn't work, try searching on related terms or concepts.
If you keep broadening your search, you'll eventually come up with
something!
